Turmeric Ginger

Category: Tea & Infusions
Golden milk, the warm turmeric-and-milk drink some know as a turmeric latte, is the easiest way into this cup. Brew it hot for a bright, warming golden infusion, steep it strong and stir it into warm milk for a golden-milk latte, or pour it over ice. It is caffeine-free. Ginger leads with a clean heat, lemongrass and orange and lemon peel keep it citrus-bright, and turmeric brings the earthy depth and golden color.
On its own, turmeric is earthy and muted. Here the ginger does the heavy lifting up front, the citrus peel lifts it, and a little Tellicherry black peppercorn adds a gentle warmth at the back. The result tastes bright and lively rather than dusty.
We blend it in small batches in Portland. In Indian kitchens, turmeric and ginger have long been steeped together into warm, homey drinks like golden milk (haldi doodh), and this carries that same golden warmth.
Ingredients: turmeric, ginger, lemongrass, orange peel, lemon peel, Tellicherry black peppercorn. Caffeine-free. No sugar, no preservatives. Vegan.
How do I brew it?
Use one teaspoon per eight ounces of water, heated to around 200°F. Steep for five minutes. Use fresh leaves each time you brew.
Does the turmeric stain?
Yes. Turmeric stains cups, counters, and cloth. Rinse cups soon after use, wipe spills quickly, and a stainless or glass infuser cleans up more easily than porcelain.
How do I keep it from tasting bitter?
Steep off a boil at around 200°F and pull it at five minutes. Over-steeping past that point draws out turmeric's earthy, bitter side. The ginger and citrus are meant to lead.
How do I make golden milk with it?
Steep it strong, then stir it into warmed milk with a little sweetener. The black peppercorn is already in the blend, so there is nothing else to add.
