A jet-black crystal scattered across a pink piece of salmon or a rim of gold pineapple turns a plain plate into something people photograph. Hawaiian-style black salt is a dramatic finishing salt built for that visual contrast. Sprinkle it over grilled salmon and steak, fresh fruit like pineapple and watermelon, dark chocolate desserts, or the rim of a cocktail glass, where the color pops and a coarse crystal adds a clean, crunchy bite.

The color comes from activated charcoal blended into Pacific Ocean sea salt. That charcoal tints the crystal black and lends a faint earthy, mineral note behind the salt, nothing more dramatic than that. The flavor stays firmly salty with a whisper of earthiness, so it finishes a dish without taking it over. Use it as a finisher rather than a cooking salt, since the striking look is the whole point.

Packed fresh in small batches in Portland.

Ingredients: Pacific Ocean salt, activated charcoal. No additives, no preservatives. Naturally gluten-free and vegan.

Does it taste like charcoal?
Barely. The charcoal is there mostly for color, with only a faint earthy, mineral note behind the salt. Used as a finishing sprinkle, it reads as clean, crunchy salt with a subtle earthy edge, not a mouthful of charcoal.

How much should I use?
A light hand. Because the crystals are dark and bold-looking, it is easy to over-scatter and tip the flavor earthy or overly salty. A few crystals across the top of a finished dish give the visual drama and the crunch without overdoing it.

Will it stain my food or dishes?
On dry food and a quick finish, no. If the crystals sit in a wet dish or a damp glass rim for a long time, the black color bleeds a little, so add it close to serving. For a cocktail rim, press it onto a damp rim right before pouring.

What is it best used on?
Foods where the black-against-color contrast shines: grilled salmon and steak, bright fruit like pineapple and watermelon, dark chocolate, and cocktail rims. The coarse crystal also grips onto meat well, so it stays put rather than sliding off.

Should I cook with it or finish with it?
Finish with it. Stirred into a dish early, the color disappears and you lose the entire reason to use it. Keep it for the last sprinkle, where the black crystals stay visible on top.

Mia P. ★★★★★

The black crystals look wild against a pink piece of salmon, and they don't dissolve into mush like regular flaky salt—they stay crunchy. Guests always ask what the dark specks are before they even take a bite.

Grace ★★★★★

Sprinkled a few of these jet-black crystals over seared salmon and the contrast looked almost too good to eat. The crunch is bigger than regular flaky salt, and it doesn't melt away instantly on warm food. Already planning to rim a pineapple margarita with it next.

Ella Q. ★★★★★

I bought this mainly for the dramatic black crystals on salmon, and the color contrast is even better in person than I expected. It's a finishing salt so I use it sparingly, but a little pinch on pineapple has become my favorite weird snack.
